WM Reports: Mr Matthew Miller of the The Catholic Men’s Podcast has published a video reading excerpts and commenting on our essay on what St Philip and St Thomas Aquinas can teach us about a very common problem—depression.
The Catholic Men’s Podcast “helps Catholic men to find good works of literature that will help them become more cultured, more gentlemanly and more like a saint.” Essentially, Miller is a storyteller, and his delivery (in all his videos) is excellent.

This essay was written in 2022. We republished it this year on the feast of St Philip Neri, and it appears to have touched a lot of readers. Deo gratias. Here’s an excerpt:
There are a minority of Catholics today who hold that depression is a fault, or the fruit of a fault – perhaps nothing more than vanity and pride. They speak as if depression is an invention of modern (and therefore, we are to assume, false) thought, and that perhaps doesn’t even really exist. They speak as if one could free oneself from a state of depression by acts of the will.
The essay digs into the topic, demonstrating how harmful and unjust such views are, and how the two saints mentioned refute them in their separate ways.
For the record: the essay was not autobiographical—except for the bit about “happy little ducks.” Here it is:
