Are Catholics obliged to ‘bless Israel’? Some points missed in recent commentary
The debate over “Blessing Israel,” raised recently in a Ted Cruz and Tucker Carlson interview, has suffered from a radical misdirection. Despite his good intentions, some of this misdirection has regrettably been caused by Carlson himself.
In order to evaluate the ideas advanced, we will begin by considering a wider range of evidence that could be marshalled in support of Cruz’s comments.
Such texts have been used by modern Zionists and Judaizers to justify the unconditional political support for the modern nation or state of Israel. But such interpretations ignore both the conditional and messianic nature of the promises.
As we shall see, Cruz’s interpretation of these passages is false and entails absurd consequences – but nonetheless points towards the true interpretation of God’s remarkable promises to Abraham.
